Today’s recommended book is for those that enjoy a good thriller. The Green Mile by Stephen King is a perfect way to kill time while immersing yourself in an amazing story.
As a young teen, this is the book that made me a Stephen King fan. My Mom was always a fan and I had tried to read a few of the novels she had, like Carrie and Cujo. I couldn’t get into those at that time, they were too dark and scary. Then King did something brilliant. He released the Green Mile in 6 monthly installments. Each book was thin and left you wanting more. I grew up in a small town and we had to drive to the next town over to Walmart. We would pick it up on the release day, I would read it all that day and then the wait was on for the next installment. Ah, the pre-internet days.
Even though I complained and thought I couldn’t make it 30 days without knowing what happened next, I secretly loved the anticipation. The characther development was spot on and I was on pins and needles, waiting to see what would happen next.
After The Green Mile I have become an avid Stephen King fan. This novel is still my favorite, but it’s a close call with a few of his others. King has a way of creating realistic characters that fit into unrealistic settings. He creates suspense and it is thrilling because you can never anticipate what may happen next.
A few quotes:
“What our parents tell us when we are small seldom goes ignored, no matter how foolish it may be.”
“The world turns, that’s all. You can hold on and turn with it, or stand up to protest and be spun right off.”
“Time takes it all, whether you want it to or not. Time takes it all, time bears it away and in the end there is only darkness. Sometimes we find others in that darkness and sometimes we lose them there again.”
Check this one out if you haven’t already. If you aren’t sure if you are a Stephen King fan, this one will help you decide one way or the other. Would love to share thoughts in the comments!
